Premier Cru White Burgundy - Chardonnay. A premier cru vineyard high on the hill towards Volnay, away from the southern tip that is occupied by Perrieres, Genevrieres and Charmes. In fact it is on the left hand side as you veer down toward Meursault, if driving from Pommard and Volnay. The vineyard itself can be divided into an upper and lower band. The upper band while limestone and stony also has a good amount of blonde/brunette soil. This produces fine, delicate wines with a perfume and discreet fruitiness if not for the short term. The lower band has much whiter soils with an oolite vein running through it. This results in very mineral wines that the Domaine relate to Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots or upper Corton-Charlemagne. The Domaine has eight hectares planted in 1955 that result in an average of 1200 bottles per harvest. From the lower section. 11,000 vines per hectare, 20% new oak. The most high toned and mineral yet. Jaw clenching. Nuances of dry floral extract. The flavours are low and brooding and remain in the back ground yet ever present. On a slightly larger scale than the previous wines. | "A deft application of wood sets off the aromas of toasted hazelnut, matchstick, lychee nut and pear compote. The generous, succulent and nicely energetic flavors possess a borderline opulent mid-palate that contrasts moderately with the impressively intense, long and balanced finish where the wood treatment flashed by the nose resurfaces." 92 Points (Outstanding) Allen Meadows, Burghound.
