Premier Cru White Burgundy - Chardonnay. A large enclosed vineyard of four hectares with a wall down the middle. The top half is a monopole: Clos du Chateau de la Maltroye. The bottom half is owned by three growers; Guy Amiot, Jean-Noel Gagnard and, of course, Michel Niellon. Niellon owns 0.52 hectares that was planted in 1977. Lifted, defined and floral. Nuances of reduction. The palate is very fine and discreet. Lemon pith with a delicate mineral acid structure. A long and moreish wine.” | “Three ages of vine in white, and they have some Pinot Noir here too. The nose is a little bit neutral, but there is very good bone structure and quite some power at the back. Not slight by any means. This has Chassagne’s rectangular shape in contrast to the roundness of Meursault or a more linear Puligny.” 91 Points, Jasper Morris: Inside Burgundy | “Aromas of fresh pear, toasted bread, peach and nutmeg introduce Niellon’s 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Maltroie, a medium to full-bodied, elegantly satiny wine that’s pure, precise and delicately chalky, with fine depth at the core and a nicely defined finish.” 90 Points, William Kelley: The Wine Advocate | “Plush, evoking butterscotch, vanilla, clove and nutmeg top notes wrapped around a core of peach and apple flavors. Firms up on the finish, but a year or two in bottle should help this find equilibrium. A smoky mineral element adds depth. Best from 2021 through 2027.” 94 Points, Bruce Sandersen: Wine Spectator, February 2020
