Pommard’s main feature is the stream of the Avant Dheune which in
prehistoric times was a flowing river into what was the Jurassic sea.
Therefore heavier soils (i.e clay) were washed down and alas why
Pommard has heavier more structured wines than say that of Volnay.
En Mareau is in the combe (side valley) with a cooler aspect than those
further around toward Volnay, or those on the Beaune side of
Pommard.
"A mentholated top note is present on the equally ripe yet still
agreeably fresh dark berry fruit and earth-suffused nose. The relatively
refined middle weight flavors possess good verve and detail before
terminating in a youthfully austere finish that is shaped by mildly
rustic tannins."
