Domaine Charles Baur | Eguisheim, Alsace

For those long-standing clients who remember the Ross Duke days, Charles Baur will be a familiar name, from France's most beautiful village, Eguisheim in Alsace (an official title). The Baurs have been in the village since the early 1700s. Charles started bottling under the family name in 1950, his son Armand took over in 1980, and Armand's son Arnaud, an agricultural engineer by training, has run the cellar since 2009. Seventeen hectares in and around Eguisheim with parcels in three grand crus, Eichberg, Pfersigberg and Brand, certified organic since the 2014 vintage. Everything is hand picked and sorted, whole bunch pressed and left on fine lees for nine months before bottling.

The wines balance the richness that is typical for the region with precision, length and a fine yet present phenolic structure. Not as blunt and broad as many in Alsace, but pure and long. I love these wines, I always have, particularly with food. They reward the consumer ten fold and give a lot of interest for not many pennies.

They have a very large range and, as always, I have been selective. Offered here are the five I would buy myself: the dry Riesling 'Cuvée Charles' (2024 was a cooler year, so more freshness and tension than the 2023 by Arnaud's own account), the Grand Cru Eichberg Riesling from the marl and limestone slope directly behind the village, a Gewürztraminer that is restrained by the standards of the grape, and the two Vendanges Tardives, Riesling from the granite of Grand Cru Brand above Turckheim and Pinot Gris from Eichberg. The last two are properly sweet, late picked wines and they are a lot of wine for the money.

As with the last Charles Baur offer, we will only order what we sell, which is how the pricing ends up where it is. Once the Expressions of Interest close the order goes to Arnaud and the wines ship with our next groupage container.
